ट्रिग्राम रोबोट सूमो एक टीम प्रारूप में आयोजित किया जाता है, जिसमें प्रत्येक टीम में 2 भाग लेने वाले छात्र और 1-2 कोचिंग शिक्षक होते हैं। दो श्रेणियां हैं: प्राथमिक विद्यालय और माध्यमिक विद्यालय। भाग लेने वाले छात्रों को वर्तमान में प्रतियोगिता के दिन प्राथमिक या माध्यमिक विद्यालय में नामांकित होना चाहिए। प्रतियोगिता का मैदान एक गोलाकार मंच है जिसका व्यास 2.8 मीटर है। मंच जमीन से लगभग 35 सेंटीमीटर ऊपर है, और रोबोट शुरू करने वाला क्षेत्र किनारे से 50 सेंटीमीटर दूर स्थित एक ट्रेपोज़ॉइड आकार है। मंच के किनारे पर तैयारी लाइन के अंदर का क्षेत्र रोबोट के लिए शुरुआती क्षेत्र है, इस क्षेत्र में प्रत्येक टीम के रोबोट एक दूसरे के विपरीत रखे गए हैं।
